Wylde World: Hotel Kompas, Dubrovnik

Report by Sarah Brown / Photography by Yamine Daaboul

Hotel Kompas is a stunning Croatian hotel built in the cliffside, overlooking Lapad Bay in The Adriatic Sea. It has a chic, Scandinavian-inspired design and its modern feel is striking against the rugged backdrop of Dubrovnik. One is greeted on arrival by staff; the entrance is calm and serene, and we immediately noticed a beautiful scent, reminiscent of a spa. This aroma is diffused throughout the hotel and it makes one’s experience there feel luxe. The foyer boasts a beautiful glass wall with a sea view and has a dramatic impact when you arrive. Before we were escorted to our room, we absorbed the view and it made us excited for our adventures to come. The architects have endeavoured to ensure that most of the rooms are sea-facing, therefore most have spectacular views of the ocean and forest-covered mountains. This is a key factor about choosing this hotel; it is not more costly to have the extravagance of a beautiful view. At the front of the hotel are the pool and sun loungers which are surrounded by towering pine trees. These reflect the lush greenery at the opposite end of the bay, where there is a forest covering the mountain. The style of the pool isn’t dissimilar to an infinity pool and it is perfect for a peaceful morning swim whilst observing the ocean below. The hotel is right on the shoreline of Lapad Bay and because of the proximity to the beach, the sun loungers are free for residents of Kompas. A fabulous perk - no more rushing out at 7AM, towel in hand!

Created by some of Croatia’s leading designers, the style of Kompas is modern and sleek. A palette of creams and whites creates a vibe of serenity, whilst keeping the space light and bright. In the foyer, bars, and rooms, there are walls of glass instead of smaller windows, which showcase the views to maximum effect and ensures as much natural light as possible. Continuing the contemporary theme, scattered throughout the hotel are many pieces of modern art, from paintings to abstract lighting features. Every room at Kompas has a large balcony and the interior is light and airy with soft cream carpets, which feels like a luxury for a Mediterranean hotel. The bathrooms are large and include a rainfall shower which is perfect after a day in the sun. A standout element of the hotel is the rooftop bar, which runs along one side of the building, giving panoramic views of the bay. Gorgeous during the day for a coffee on the balcony and just as stunning at night looking at the twinkling lights on the shore, cocktail in hand.

Food and drink at Kompas is a highlight of the stay. There are numerous bars where you can choose a drink from their extensive menu at any time; as well as the rooftop bar, there is a day bar located by the pool. Along the shoreline there are many fantastic seafood restaurants but if you’re not looking to venture too far, the hotel restaurant will not disappoint with their à la carte menu. We enjoyed truffle pasta, bursting with flavour, while watching the sun go down - the most spectacular end to our first day in Dubrovnik. Breakfast is included in your stay and is everything you could want from a hotel breakfast. There’s a generous array of sweet and savoury options, fruits and salads, something hearty and something light. So many different jams and accompaniments for your pancakes it’s difficult to choose! There is a choice to sit indoors or outside in the sun and the staff are professional and attentive. For those wanting to indulge in some wellness and relaxation, Kompas has a beautiful spa and fitness centre to no extra cost. There is a freshwater indoor swimming pool with stone walls and loungers, it is always very quiet which is a perfect escape from the busier outdoor pool area. After a cool dip you can take yourself off to the sauna and steam rooms. If you’re after a few more endorphins, then there is a state-of-the-art gym for your perusal.

Arguably one of the most attractive factors when choosing Kompas is the location. Nestled in between the sparkling Adriatic Sea and the ancient city walls of Dubrovnik, it’s impossible to miss out on any of the magic of what Dubrovnik has to offer, as it is all within touching distance. Across the beach is a spot ideal for hiking. Once you make your way up to the cliff edge at the top, the views are spectacular. The celeste sky meets the cyan ocean and it is breathtaking.
