Artist/photographer Fiona Garden’s intensely personal new exhibition
Mews Study v37, 2019
One of Wylde’s longstanding go-to photographers, Fiona Garden has immortalised many creatives/performers for our pages, from Years & Years, to Daphne Guinness and BANKS. However she has recently turned her lens – simultaneously intimate and ethereal – on to herself. There is something completely modern about these personal images, and yet they sit comfortably in the grand tradition of artists’ self-portraits, as well as classical nudes. With an unflinching eye, Garden uses herself as model and incorporates her signature, eerie photographic style – whereby slow exposures create mind-bending light effects – to both reveal and distort her physical form. Formerly a model herself, Garden has worked alone on this project, removing the various visions of – often male – photographers, to form an intensely personal record of herself as a woman, now. Imperfections are glorified, expectations of her gender subverted. This is art at its purest; committed by and for the creator herself, with next to no interference from outside. Artist and muse as one.
